🌲 Glauca Pencil Pines: The Elegant Vertical Accent for Modern Gardens

Sleek, stately, and architectural, Glauca Pencil Pines are one of the most popular evergreens for creating structure and luxury in Australian gardens. Their naturally narrow, columnar shape makes them the perfect solution for driveway avenues, formal entrances, Tuscan-inspired landscaping, poolside planting, and narrow boundary screens.

Whether you’re designing a formal estate garden or looking to add evergreen height with a small footprint, this variety delivers sophistication year-round.

🌿 What Makes Glauca Pencil Pines Special?
• Blue-green foliage that holds colour through all seasons
• Tall, narrow growth habit — excellent for tight or narrow spaces
• Fast to moderate growth once established
• Low maintenance and drought tolerant once settled in
• Ideal for hedging, screening, and feature accents

🌱 Planting & Position

For the best results, plant Glauca Pencil Pines in a location that receives full sun for at least six hours per day. They perform best in well-drained soil, ideally a sandy to loamy mix, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid areas that stay wet or waterlogged, as this can lead to root issues. When planting multiple trees, allow 80cm to 1.2m between plants if you are creating a screening or hedging row, or space them even wider when using them as individual feature specimens to highlight their striking architectural form. Typical mature size (can vary with climate & soil) :3–10m high × 0.8–1.2m wide

💧 Watering Guide

New plants will benefit from deep watering two to three times a week for the first twelve weeks to help them establish strong root systems. Once established, they generally require deep watering every ten to fourteen days during hot, dry weather. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering, as these plants do not tolerate constantly wet conditions. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant decline, so ensure that excess water can drain away freely and avoid any pooling around the base.

🌱 Fertilising & Feeding

Feed plants two to three times per year for best growth and resilience. In early spring, apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser suitable for evergreens. Follow with an organic soil conditioner or seaweed tonic in early summer to support overall plant health. In early autumn, use a low-nitrogen formula to help strengthen the root system before cooler weather arrives. Avoid using high-nitrogen lawn fertilisers near the root zone, especially in small garden beds or courtyards, as they may cause excessive soft growth and weaken the plant.

✂️ Pruning & Shape Control

Glauca Pencil Pines require very little pruning to maintain their natural, upright form, making them an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes. If shaping is desired, a light tip-prune in late winter or early spring is usually sufficient to encourage dense, healthy growth. Take care not to cut back into old, brown wood, as these areas may not reshoot and could leave permanent gaps in the foliage. For hedging or formal screening, trim lightly once or twice a year to maintain symmetry and a clean, uniform appearance.
